 Pork Barrel Protocols

Every description of Web Services I read about always mentions the typical example of a client initiating a request and receiving a response. This fits very nicely with the HTTP protocol since its not much different than browsing. However true web services also support client side Events, where the service side, unsolicited, invokes a routine at the client. This unfortunately is not as easy, due to security, firewalls, IP's changing (due to leased DHCP), etc. I'd like to see this aspect of the WSDL model discussed more often. (at the listener level). I'd also like to see more discussion on how to actually program the listener applications in a web services client/server model for different platforms. Until we get to this point XML and all the other standards are merely acedemic exercises. I'm more of a craftsman, I wanna build something that works, runs fast, and does NOT have the excessive layering I see coming out of W3C, and implements OO processing of both Methods and Events.
